If you’re looking for an October half marathon in Pennsylvania that’s nothing like the usual city loop or park path, you’ve found it. End of the Road Half Marathon and One Tunnel 4 Miler take place October 18–19, 2025, in Waterfall, PA, on a stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike abandoned since 1968.
It’s a weekend where history, scenery, and runner camaraderie collide — and the feedback says it all:
“The scenery! Also, the race was incredibly well run. Medals were fantastic and those post race snacks were awesome!” – Sarah H. (2024)
1. Run Through Two Massive, Unlit Tunnels
This isn’t your average road race. Each Half Marathon takes you through nearly five miles of eerie, echoing, pitch-black tunnels — no lights, no traffic, just you and the sound of your footsteps. A headlamp or flashlight is required, making the experience feel part race, part adventure.
“The tunnels. No other race I’ve found like it.” – Chantal W. (2024)
2. Peak Pennsylvania Fall Foliage
The out-and-back course runs through rolling countryside framed by brilliant October colors. In mid-fall, the surrounding ridges light up in shades of gold, orange, and red — the kind of views that make every step worth it.
3. A Weekend of Races and Challenges
Choose your distance and your challenge:
-
Half Marathon – Saturday or Sunday
-
One Tunnel 4 Miler – Sunday
-
Two-Day Challenges: 26.2 Road Closed Rambler (Half + Half) or 17.1 Tunnel Traveler (Half + 4 Miler)
With official pacers for both Half Marathons, runners can chase their time goals or just soak in the atmosphere.
4. Organization That Runners Notice
From detailed pre-race emails to easy-to-follow signage, this race is put on by people who understand runners’ needs. Volunteers are everywhere with encouragement, water, and snacks.
“Seriously excellent coordination and communication… your team really made it a great all-around event!” – Danielle P.
“It was so organized and I loved the location. Can’t wait to do it again.” – Melissa M. (2024)
5. More Than Just a Race
Stick around after the finish line on Saturday for Movie Night on the Turnpike (this year’s feature: The Addams Family), connect with fellow runners, and take in the small-town charm of Waterfall, PA.
“My husband and I came all the way from Massachusetts… by far this has been our favorite!” – Kelly D. (2024)
