One of Trivium Racing’s personal favorite events occurred on Sunday, March 15th – the Northern Trails Marathon and 10 Miler. Starting and finishing on the trails behind Northern Guilford High School, the course extended through some of the Triad’s newest trails for its first and last 5 miles. The Marathon course completed a classic loop through Northern Greensboro’s watershed trail systems, constantly on the wooded shores of Lake Townsend, Lake Jeanette, and Lake Brandt.
Filling to capacity in its inaugural year, the event drew out 200+ registrants and dozens of spectators & supporters. The brisk morning overcast weather was perfect for the marathon runners, who hit the course at 9:00 a.m., with the ten-milers close behind at 9:15.
For the top overall marathon finishers, Jason Tischer, hailing from Raleigh, took the cake in 3:09:33.65. Not far behind was Jamestown’s Shannon Scott, who finished in 3:12:12.74. Number three overall was also our first female finisher, Meredith Edwards, who clocked a 3:21:18.27. Tyler Bradshaw of Oak Ridge rounded out the top three male finishers, with a 4th place finish and an overall time of 3:28:56.62. Coming in 8th overall was the 2nd female finisher in the field, Shannon Bradford, running 3:35:47.92. From Jefferson, NC was Annette Bednosky, the 3rd female finisher in the field, running a 4:05:20.25, and rounding out the top three overall finishers who received $50 gift certificates to Dick’s Sporting Goods.
On the 10 miler end, the first finisher appeared around 10:30 a.m., in the form of Shan Guo, from Cary. Less than a minute and a half behind Shan, who finished in 1:16:28.7, came in Ivan Almekinders, out of Burlington, NC, running a 1:17:50.43. Close on the heels of Ivan, at 1:18:09.33, bounded Tyrell Heaton, for 3rd overall. On the female side, Hillsborough resident Amy Singer took the gold with a 1:30:10.96. About 400m back, MaryBeth Errington came charging up to take 2nd in a time of 1:31:55.61. Crystal Craig came in to take 3rd overall female with a time 1:32:48.67.
Finishers enjoyed a post-race atmosphere that included music, a yogurt and fruit bar, and an awards ceremony in which winners received custom race canteens, as well as Dick’s Sporting Goods gift credit. All finishers also received medal number 1 in the 5-piece Super-Medal, and a Leslie Jordan, soft polyester race shirt.
The Northern Trails Marathon and 10 Mile will most certainly be a stop in the 2016 Trivium Running Series, and will have an increased capacity to 300 participants. After such a tremendously positive event, we are excited to establish this race as central to any trail racer’s annual calendar!
