The John Dewey Dash 5K and Family Fun Run

Due to low registration numbers, event directors have made the tough call to cancel this event in 2017. Stay tuned for more information about this event in the future!

Greensboro has a NEW and exciting event that is the first to benefit Swim for Cancer.  We are kicking off the first John Dewey Dash 5k run & 1 mile dash, May 6th 2017.  This race will be located at Mendenhall Middle School in Greensboro. We have designed this race for all ages to participate and have fun. Our GOAL is for any participant to allocate their race fee to support a local swimmer or club of your choice, when you and your family go online to register.

You will have the ability to select a local swimmer to get ‘’Swim For Cancer ‘’ Sponsor credit or select a Swim Club for Team credit.  You will be able to type in the swimmers name or Swim Team / Club. We are excited because it’s the first race of its kind with the proceeds supporting ‘’Swim for Cancer “.  Community swimmers can take this opportunity to recruit participants to run in this event and receive credit for Swim for Cancer donations.

History of Swim for Cancer

Swim for Cancer was established in 1973, in Greensboro N.C. Bob Sawyer a long time swim coach at Grimsley High School is credited for establishing ‘’ Swim For Cancer ‘’ and raising donations for The American Cancer Society. Renamed In memory of John Gordon Dewey. This annual event is also known as Greensboro’s City meet.

His story, John was an excellent community swimmer and while he was a junior in high school he won the title for the NC Championship Meet in the 100 freestyle. In John’s freshman year he was unfortunately diagnosed with skin cancer. While enduring surgery and treatment John helped Mr. Sawyer coach the High School swim team and inspired others with his dedication. Later in his senior year John went home from school sick and past away the following day.  This is a heartfelt story of a great young swimmers life. We can all relate to probably knowing a friend or relative that has experienced Cancer.  We want to provide a partnership in support with this race benefiting The American Cancer Society & Swim For Cancer. Hoping we can help in Finding a cure for Cancer or support for someone battling it. Please participate in the JDDash so we can run for Fun & Swim to live!
